The Code for Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes has replaced the Ecohomes scheme as a benchmark for environmental sustainability in domestic property design and construction. The Code for Sustainable Homes assesses each unit in a development against the following design categories:
- Energy and CO² Emissions
- Water
- Materials
- Surface water run-off
- Waste
- Pollution
- Health & Well-being
- Management
- Ecology
Units are assessed at both design stage and post-construction stage
Apart from the above design categories, the Code for Sustainable Homes includes new areas of sustainability design, such as Lifetime Homes and the inclusion of composting facilities.
Since May 1st 2008, all new built homes in England require a Code Rating.
The Code for Sustainable Homes has a scoring system of six levels. The levels are achieved by meeting a combination of mandatory and flexible standards.
Code Assessment procedure
We carry out Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments in several stages:
- Initial desktop assessment based on drawings, SAP calculation and provisional information provided by the developer
- Registration of the site and initial assessment at design stage, based on specifications, drawings and commitment from developer; issue of interim code assessment certificate
- Post-construction final assessment on completion, basede on confirmation of compliance with requirements, site records and inspection; issue of final code assessment certificate
